Winter Tire Pressure: What Wisconsin Drivers Should Know

posted on

We love living in Wisconsin. A place where we get to experience all four seasons—from the sunny, sweaty temperatures of summer to the chilly, snowy weather in winter.

When the seasons change, we usually need to make some changes to our wardrobes and our homes to keep up. For example, when the temperature drops, you pack away your tank tops and shorts and pull out your parkas and snow boots. You store your patio furniture in the shed and pull out your snowblower.

Your vehicle might need some changes when the weather changes, too. If you don’t have all-season tires, it’s time to swap them out for winter tires. If your tires are good to go, make sure to check the tread to help ensure safe winter driving

But once the snow starts falling, it’s important you don’t just forget about your tires until spring. Did you know those frigid winter temps can cause your tire pressure to drop?

Many tire manufacturers estimate your tires lose around one psi for every 10 degrees the temperature drops. So if your tire pressure was good to go last July and you haven’t checked the pressure since, it’s probably worth taking a look! Actually, best practice is to check your tire pressure at least once per month.

You can find the ideal psi (pounds of force per square inch) for your vehicle in your owner’s manual.

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

It’s very easy to check your tire pressure at home. All you need is a pressure gauge to put on your tire stem to read the pressure. Remember to check the pressure when the tires are cold.

If your tire pressure is low, you can simply add air to your tires using an air compressor at home. Or, many gas stations have free air stations where you can fill up. Be sure to bring your gauge with you so you can make sure you have the right amount of pressure after adding.

Remember you can always stop by Hartje Tire and Service to have your tire pressure checked or have us add air to your tires. We’re happy to help you!
