How to Communicate with Your Automotive Service Specialist

posted on

Communicating with your Auto Mechanic Hartje Tire & Service

All successful relationships require clear communication, and your relationship with your automotive professional is no different! Without a good sense of communication, it is easy for confusion, misunderstandings and frustration to occur...things you definitely want to avoid in an auto shop.

But don’t worry, our team of automotive industry veterans has tips to help you speak easily and effectively with your auto service specialist. Read on (and listen to the podcast episode at AllAboutTheCarPodcast.com) for a lesson in “how to talk shop”!

Why can Communication be so Difficult?

When talking with your auto service specialist, it might feel like you’re both speaking a different language. This is because auto technicians are familiar with technical terms and shop lingo that sound like gibberish to the rest of us. Good communication is a two-way street: it is the job of your service specialist to explain things in a way you can understand, and it’s your responsibility to speak up when you’re confused.

Let’s say you’re bringing your vehicle in because you’ve been hearing a strange sound while driving. Below are details you should tell your auto service specialist.

Tips for Clear Communication from the Car Owner:
  • Describe the noise (is there a buzzing, grinding, or rattling sound?)
  • Where does the noise seem to be coming from?
  • How long have you been noticing it?
  • Do you hear it all the time or only when braking, on the highway, etc.?
  • Suggest a ride-along with the auto technician – you can point out exactly what you’re hearing!
  • Ask as many questions as it takes to fully understand the issue
  • Request to see the problem on your car (if you’re at work or elsewhere, ask them to send a photo to your cell phone!)
Tips for Clear Communication from the Auto Technician:
  • When possible, use common words instead of technical terms or shop jargon (check out this list of automotive terms and definitions!)
  • Ask the car owner if they understand what you’re saying
  • Be patient – you may need to explain things a few different ways
  • The internet is a great resource to help you describe vehicle parts and issues to Guests – don't be afraid to use it!

Finding an Auto Shop

If you’re a first-time car owner or new to the area, you’ll need to find an auto shop to service your vehicle. Consider asking family, friends and neighbors where they go. It’s also helpful to check out online reviews on sites like Yelp and Google. You’ll be able to read about recent experiences from locals to help you narrow down your search. You can even visit a shop for a “test run” - simply go in for a small service like an oil change to help get a feel for the technicians!

Trusting Your Auto Service Specialist

Just like communication, a sense of trust is important for any relationship. This is something that will form over time after having positive experiences with your auto service specialist. Trust does more than give you peace of mind while your car is in the shop, though. Creating a relationship with your auto technician will also help him/her get to know you, your driving style, and your car. For instance, they’ll have a better idea of the services the vehicle has had in the past and when maintenance is coming due.

While communicating with your auto service specialist isn’t always easy, it is imperative for clear understanding on both ends and the health of your car. Making an effort to ask questions and get to know your auto technician will help you form a trusting, mutually-beneficial relationship. By following these tips, you’ll be more comfortable speaking with your auto service specialist and have better experiences at the shop!

Don’t forget to listen to the All About The Car podcast episode! The team dives deeper into communication tips, takes a Wisconsin Road Trip to Levis Mound Recreation Area, and discusses a common Question from the Counter: the pros & cons of full-synthetic vs. standard blend oil. Plus, Jodi is along for the ride...you won’t want to miss it!
