Conventional vs. Synthetic Motor Oil - What Does Your Vehicle Need?

posted on

Motor Oil for your Vehicle Synthetic vs Conventional TipsSince motor oil lubricates the moving parts in your engine, it is one of the most important fluids in your car. It’s essential to choose an oil that meets the needs of you and your vehicle.

So, what is the difference between synthetic and conventional oil? If you’re not sure, this blog (and your owner’s manual) will help answer this common question.

Let’s start with conventional oil. Conventional oil options are often recommended for vehicles made in or before the year 2000. This product flows at a slower speed, which helps to protect seasoned engine parts from wear. Conventional oil is also cheaper than synthetic options.

Now, what are the advantages of synthetic oil?

For starters, synthetic oil is a higher quality product. In comparison to conventional oil, synthetic oil is hardier in extreme temperatures (great for chilly Wisconsin winters) and lasts longer, too. Synthetic motor oils are developed using a chemical process that removes impurities from the oil. This makes the product better suited to meet the demands of modern vehicles. As a result, synthetic oil promotes higher levels of engine performance and protection than conventional options. Synthetic motor oil outperforms conventional oil by:

  • Offering greater engine protection
  • Promoting a cleaner engine
  • Flowing better in cold temperatures
  • Protecting critical turbocharge parts
  • Releasing fewer emissions
  • Provides better fuel and oil economy

Synthetic oil also gives your vehicle a longer oil change interval, so you do not need to have the oil changed as often. Even though synthetic oil costs much more than conventional oil, this effective and efficient product is well worth the buy. It is widely believed that full synthetic oil is the highest quality product, followed by synthetic blend and then mineral motor oil.

While the qualities of synthetic oil make it the more popular option, the type of oil you need will ultimately depend on your owner’s manual, the manufacturer requirements, and your driving habits. If you are often in stop-and-go traffic, drive short distances, or haul with your vehicle, consider full synthetic oil. Typically, it is okay to upgrade to a full synthetic oil when the car manufacturer recommends conventional oil because of the product’s many benefits. Additionally, switching between synthetic and conventional oil will not produce negative consequences.
